Avoiding Low Nutrient Foods & Embracing Nutrient Dense Foods For Optimal Health

By Ollie Lawson

As I trawled through the plethora of health related blogs and websites on the internet, I was lucky  enough to come across an excellent blog by Dr Joel Fuhrman on weight control, optimal health and disease prevention and reversal, through eating an organic nutrient dense diet.

SHOPPING FOR A NUTRIENT DENSE DIET

This enlightened and life enhancing form of eating ( I hesitate to use the term diet because of it’s oft negative connotations) can be termed  Nutritarianism and the health seeking, discerning people who adhere to it , Nutritarians.

Dr Fuhrman believes that the quality of a diet can be based on three simple criteria:

1. The level of micronutrients ( vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals ) per calorie.

Understanding Phytochemicals/ Phytonutrients

The best known phytochemicals are carotenoids, flavonoids and isoflavones.

They provide the rich pigmentation and coloring of fruits, vegetables and various legumes and are absolutely essential in protecting the body and helping it combat disease.

2. Amounts of macronutrients ( fats, carbohydrates, proteins) to meet individual needs, without excessive calories that may lead to weight gain or poor health.

3. Avoidance of potentially toxic substances such as trans fats, and limited amounts of other potentially harmful substances such as sodium.

Other toxic substances I would add to the list include, various artificial food additives, colorings,  preservatives and artificial sweeteners such as aspartame.

Dr Fuhrman believes that a diet of low nutrient foods fuels overeating behavior and various health problems

Unfortunately, the diet followed by a majority of people today falls into that category.

Excessive consumption of high glycemic, processed carbohydrates,  hormone and anti biotic laden meats,  hydrogenated fats, ultra heat treated omega 6 vegetable oils, and perhaps saddest of all, nutrient denuded none organic fruits and vegetables grown in equally nutrient denuded soil.

Fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes are the most nutrient dense foods in our bountiful creation. It is sad that mass farming methods together with the use of toxic pesticides and sprays have severely reduced the disease fighting and health giving qualities of these foods

I already follow  a pretty healthy diet, but I shall be making some adjustments to become more of a nutritarian in my eating habits.

I urge my readers to consider doing the same
